1950s Black Strapless Tulle and Sequinned Dress with Bow Design

This 1950s black tulle gown was created by an unknown British couture salon, and is very reminiscent of Pierre Balmain's haute couture designs circa 1955. A dressy cocktail gown from this era, it is adorned with playful details that make it special. The whole dress has a black cotton tulle overlay and the sweetheart neckline is trimmed with a pretty, sheer ruffle. There is a second tulle underlay for volume and the top is boned and lined in black satin for a comfortable, flattering wear. The dress is embellished with black sequins which shine silver whenever they catch the light. They form elegant, shimmering swirls and bow shapes across the bust and down the front of the skirt. The waistband has piping which forms a basque shape and, from this, falls a typically ‘50s full-skirt down to the ankle. This dress fastens at the rear with a hidden zip.

This piece is in excellent vintage condition; we have resecured any loose or missing sequins. Our seamstress has also darned small breaks in the tulle in two or three places. You'd only see these with the dress in hand if you held the tulle up to the light. It doesn’t have a composition or size label so please check the measurements below; we feel this is best suited to sizes UK 8-10 or US 4-6 with a small waist. The fabric has no stretch.
